Memoriam: BUF Alumna Kayla Rene Gant

The Baptist University of Florida (BUF) mourns the loss of alumna Kayla Rene Gant who passed away on Monday, June 9, 2025, at her home surrounded by her family. Kayla graduated from BUF on December 7, 2018, with a Bachelor of Arts in Education Studies. While at the University, Kayla brought so much joy to others, especially her beloved husband and fellow BUF alumnus Ryan of 11 years. In announcing her passing, Ryan shared,

“My precious, strong, beautiful Kayla passed away last night. Eleven and a half years of pain, medical struggles, frustration…gone in an instant, ‘No more sorrow, no more pain.’ Folks your prayers and love for Kayla and my family over the years have encouraged us more than you will ever know. Words fail me right now and though we don’t understand God’s plan, but we continue to trust Him in the days and weeks ahead.”

Reflecting on Kayla’s life, Dr. Kaye Johnson, her advisor and primary professor at the University said,

“Kayla had a strong desire to teach children and be a positive influence on their lives. She faced many obstacles after her accident but persevered, completed her studies, and received her degree. Kayla was so proud! She loved teaching and made it her mission that her students would see Jesus through her.”

Stephanie (Whipple) Hinckley BUF alumna recalled,

“My most proud memory of Kayla is our crazy dance parties late at night in the dorm rooms in college. So embarrassing but so epic watching those videos now. Kayla was so strong, fought so many hard battles, and loved her family and the Lord with everything in her… We love you Kayla and [we] know you are having a beautiful dance party in heaven!”

Today, there is no doubt that Kayla is healed and rejoicing at the feet of Jesus. May we all seek to live a life like that of Kayla – a life of honoring the Lord, serving the church, and loving our families. To God be the glory for the life of Kayla Gant.

  • I knew Kayla only through Ryan. I feel so much hurt for Bryan and the bays. I know Kayla suffered so much during her illness. I’m glad to know she is now with Jesus with no more suffering.
